Initially focusing on fully vitrified unglazed and polished monolithic floor tiles, RCL commenced commercial production in 1991 with an initial capacity of 540,000 square meters per annum, later expanded to 2,100,000 square meters in Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh. RCL went public in December 1991 to finance its vitrified ceramic tile project in Medak, AP, with a capacity of 12,000 tonnes per annum. The company collaborated with Mori, Italy, for technical expertise and assistance in setting up the plant. Although the production of unpolished tiles began in September 1991, the polished tile production started in September 1992, slightly delayed from the initial projection of February 1992. By March 1992, production of high-value mirror-polished ceramic tiles commenced.
Facing financial difficulties, RCL was referred to the BIFR in 2000, with ICICI appointed as the Operating Agency to devise a rehabilitation scheme. To adapt to evolving market demands, RCL imported equipment such as Hydraulic Press, Horizontal Drier, and Roller Kiln to produce larger sizes and varieties of tiles up to 60cm*60cm. In 2001-02, the company commissioned these equipment and commenced production. Subsequently, the installed capacity of ceramic floor tiles was increased to 1,400,000 square meters. Refurbishment and capacity enhancement works were completed during 2005-06, increasing the capacity from 1.4 million square meters to 3.5 million square meters. In 2008-09, RCL began commercial production of its Line-II project, capitalizing an amount of Rs 50.55 Crores. Currently, the company is undergoing the process of amalgamation with Bell Granito Ceramica Limited.
