Established on April 30, 1975, Nitta Gelatin India Limited (NGIL), previously known as Kerala Chemicals & Proteins Limited, engages in the manufacturing and sale of ossein, gelatin, and collagen peptide. This company, a joint venture between Kerala State Industrial Development Corporation and two prominent Japanese firms - Nitta Gelatin and Mitsubishi Corporation, began commercial production in 1979. Originally, its ossein manufacturing capacity was 3300 tpa and dicalcium phosphate (DCP) capacity was 6700 tpa. Over the years, these capacities were increased, with ossein reaching 5000 tpa and DCP to 11000 tpa by 1992-93. In 1993-94, the company initiated a liming project for ossein. By 1995-96, the first phase of this project was completed, alongside plans for a 2000-tpa gelatin manufacturing unit in collaboration with Nitta Gelatin, Japan. The company also received the Top Export Award for Ossein in 1994-95 from CAPEXIL. Despite some delays, such as those in the liming and gelatin projects, the company eventually achieved its milestones, including ISO 9002 certification for its Ossein division and the commencement of commercial operations of the Gelatin Plant at Kakkanad. However, challenges such as the mad cow disease in Europe impacted its business temporarily. Nevertheless, with investments planned in Gelatine plants and strategic collaborations, the company aimed for recovery and growth. In 2011, the company expanded its operations by acquiring assets in Alappuzha District and introducing new consumer products. Further expansions and mergers followed, including the commissioning of the Limed Ossein Plant and the installation of a new Jet Aerator at Reva Division in 2022.
