Hindustan Aeronautics Limited, established on December 23, 1940, in Bangalore by Shri Walchand Hirachand, is a company engaged in the manufacturing, repair, and maintenance of helicopters and aircraft. In January 1951, the Ministry of Defence assumed administrative control of the company. Under the guidance of Dr. V.M. Ghatge, the HT-2 Trainer aircraft successfully completed its maiden flight in 1951, which was designed and constructed by HAL.

In 2018, HAL was listed on the BSE and NSE after an IPO. The company has a diverse customer base, including defense, civil, and export sectors. Defense customers primarily consist of the Indian Air Force, Indian Army, Indian Navy, Indian Coast Guard, and more. Civil customers mainly include the Border Security Force, Oil & Natural Gas Cooperation of India, and the Government of Karnataka. HAL also generates revenue by exporting its products and services to customers such as Airbus Industries, France, Boeing, USA, Coast Guard, Mauritius, and others.

In recognition of its excellence in performance, HAL received the Raksha Mantri's awards for the year 2010-11 under the Institutional Award category in 2012-13. Additionally, it was honored with the Engineering Export Promotion Council (EEPC)'s 'Star Performer' award for defense-related products in the large enterprises category for the year 2018-19 by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India.

The Aircraft segment focuses on the production and maintenance of various aircraft models such as HAWK, LCA, SU-30 MKI, IJT, DORNIER, and HTT-40. The Helicopter segment deals with the production of helicopters like DHRUV, CHEETAH, CHETAK, LANCER, CHEETAL, RUDRA, LCH, and LUH. The Power Plant segment generates revenue from products like ADOUR 871-07 (HAWK), GARRETT TPE 331-5 (DORNIER), RD 33, and AL 31 FP. Lastly, the Avionics segment offers products such as Inertial Navigation System, Auto Stabilizer, Head-up Display, and Laser range.
