In March 1994, the company initiated a project, funded through term loans, aimed at enhancing the hotel's amenities by introducing a restaurant and bar. Further expansion plans for the hotel have been finalized and are presently being implemented.
Despite the setback caused by the plague epidemic in the country during the 1994-95 fiscal year, BHL managed to achieve improved operational performance, with a revenue increase of 11.6%. Situated in close proximity to temples, the hotel offers added convenience for foreign tourists and boasts features such as a spacious banquet hall, swimming pool, and well-maintained garden.
During the fiscal year 1998-99, the company distributed dividends at a rate of 60% to its shareholders and also generated foreign exchange earnings amounting to Rs 9.74 crores. BHL witnessed a commendable performance with increased occupancy rates, higher room rates, and greater Food & Beverage revenue, resulting in a 6% growth in profit after tax compared to the previous year.
In May 2011, Benares Hotels Limited became a subsidiary of The Indian Hotels Company Limited, which is promoted by Tata Sons Private Limited.
Over the years, several enhancements and expansions have been made to BHL's properties. The Gateway Hotel in Gondia, Maharashtra commenced operations in 2014-15. Additionally, a new banquet hall was inaugurated at The Gateway Hotel in Varanasi, while renovation work on 55 rooms was completed during 2017-18. Subsequent phases of renovation saw 96 rooms, the lobby, and the Tea Lounge revamped, starting from 2017-18. Moreover, a new banquet hall spanning approximately 7700 sq. ft was added to Taj Ganges, Varanasi during 2018-19. In 2019-20, Taj Ganges Varanasi underwent further renovations, including the refurbishment of 130 rooms, the lobby, and the Tea Lounge. The inventory of Taj Nadesar Palace was expanded with the addition of three new suites and one extra room, increasing its keys from 10 to 14. Additionally, the Tented Jiva SPA at Taj Nadesar Palace commenced operations.
