Kolkata: The ruling Trinamool Congress on Saturday wondered why the Election Commission (EC) is silent on the West Bengal government's request to allow reconstruction of houses destroyed by the recent cyclone in Jalpaiguri.
TMC leader and minister of state Bratya Basu told reporters that the Election Commission has not yet responded to the state government's application for permission to reconstruct about 5,000 houses destroyed by the cyclone in the northern part of West Bengal.
"Ever since the elections were announced, the state government has sought permission from the Election Commission to reconstruct 5,000 houses in North Bengal. But why is the Election Commission silent in this regard?" He asked question.
“We feel that the Election Commission has not yet received approval from the BJP in this regard,” he alleged.
"I am hopeful that the Prime Minister will announce something when he visits Jalpaiguri tomorrow. But I urge people not to fall prey to any promise made by him," he said.
Prime Minister Modi will address a public rally in Jalpaiguri on Sunday.
On Friday, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had said that her efforts to compensate the affected people of Jalpaiguri had not succeeded as "BJ had moved the Election Commission against it".
At least five people died and several were injured in the storm that hit North Bengal on Sunday.
