Gangtok, Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang on Saturday criticized the opposition SDF for not fielding a single woman candidate in the state's three assembly seats and the only Lok Sabha constituency where simultaneous elections will be held.

Addressing an election rally here, he claimed that the SDF did not consider "mothers and daughters of the state" worthy of representation in the assembly.

"What kind of message is the SDF giving to women by not nominating even a single one of them for the Assembly elections and Lok Sabha elections?" He asked.

Tamang said his party SKM has nominated four women for the state assembly elections and has also included other sections of the society in the list of candidates.

“We have given proper representation to all communities,” he said.

The SDF had nominated Sangeeta Tiwari in Renock assembly constituency, but after Tamang filed nomination from the seat, former minister Somnath Paudyal was replaced as their candidate.

A few days later, Tiwari switched from SDF to SKM.

In the 2019 elections, two women candidates – Farwanti Tamang and Rajkumar Thapa won on SDF tickets, but both of them later joined the BJP.

Out of total 146 candidates, only 12 women candidates are in the fray in the assembly elections and Lok Sabha elections in the state.

Voting for the 32-member Assembly and the lone Lok Sabha seat will be held on April 19.
