“The total value of Rs 2,000 bank notes in circulation, which was Rs 3.56 lakh crore at the close of business on May 19, 2023, when the withdrawal of Rs 2,000 bank notes was announced, will reduce to Rs 7,961 crore at the close of business on May 19, 2023, when the withdrawal of Rs 2,000 bank notes was announced. It has become Rs. business on April 30, 2024,” RBI said.
"The value of these Rs 2,000 notes declined to Rs 8,202 crore at the close of business on March 29, 2024," the RBI had said as part of the currency update on April 1.
The facility to exchange Rs 2,000 bank notes is available at 1 issue offices of the Reserve Bank (RBI issue offices) from May 19, 2023.
From October 09, 2023, RBI issue offices are also accepting Rs 2,000 bank notes from individuals/entities for deposit in their bank accounts.
Additionally, members of the public are sending Rs 2,000 bank notes through India Paws to any issuing office of the Reserve Bank of India from any post office in the country for credit into their bank accounts.
RBI said Rs 2,000 notes will remain legal tender.
