Narayanpur: A joint team of over 800 police personnel marched 60 kilometers on foot through dense forests before an encounter on the border of Narayanpur and Kanker districts of Chhattisgarh on Tuesday, in which ten Naxalites were killed, an official said.
The operation, which followed another encounter in the Sam area last month in which 29 Naxalites were killed, has broken the myth that Abhujmad was an impenetrable stronghold of militants, the senior officer said.
After the latest operation, security forces on Wednesday returned to their base with the bodies of the Naxalites, most of whom belonged to the Gadchirol division of the Maoists.
Basta Range Inspector General of Police Sundarraj P said, 'Operation Save Abhujmad' was launched on the night of April 28 based on information about the presence of senior Naxalites in the area bordering Maharashtra.
He said that 240 personnel of the District Reserve Guard (DRG) and 590 personnel of the state's elite anti-Naxal force Special Task Force (STF) left from various camps in Narayanpur and Kanker districts.The IG said the teams had covered a distance of 60 km in difficult terrain before reaching a camp of Naxalites around 4 am on Tuesday during a forest cordon near Tekmeta-Kakur villages.
The Naxalites fired indiscriminately, following which retaliatory action was taken, he said, adding that the firing continued intermittently for the next 16 hours.
Sundarraj said that later the bodies of ten Naxalites including three women were recovered.
Most of them, he said, were from the Gadchiroli division of the Maoists, attached to the "press team" (which handles publicity) and from Bastar in Telangana, Maharashtra and Chhattisgarh.
The IG said the DRG, STF and Border Security Force are now carrying out "area dominance operations" in the area.He said that out of the ten cadres killed so far, eight have been identified and they collectively had a reward of Rs 63 lakh on their heads.
The slain Naxalites include Telangana native Joganna (66) alias Ghissu, who was a member of the Maoists' special zonal committee, Divisional Committee member Mallesh alias Unga Madkam (41) and Vinay alias Ravi (55). Who were residents of Telangana. and Sangeeta Doge Attram (36), area committee member and Joganna's wife, the police officer said.
“Joganna had at least 196 cases registered against him in Maharashtra. He had a reward of Rs 25 lakh on his head.There were 43 cases registered against Mallesh and eight cases against Veena in Gadchiroli, Maharashtra, and both carried a reward of Rs. Rs 8 lakh on each head,” Sundarraj said.
He told that there was a reward of Rs 5 lakh on Sangeeta's head.
One AK-47 rifle with one magazine and 26 live rounds, one INSAS rifle, two .30 rifles, one .315 rifle, one 12 bore rifle with seven live rounds, four muzzle-loading guns, one with four live grenades Barrel Grenade Launcher: Shell and other ammunition and explosives were recovered from the spot, the IG said.
Apart from this, a computer, printer, satellite communication equipment, JCB excavator solar plate, daily use items, utensils and Maoist literature were also recovered from the spot, he said."This operation not only dealt a significant blow to Naxalite activities in Chhattisgarh but also foiled their plans of expansion into neighboring areas including Maharashtra," the IG said.
He said the successful operation underlines the effectiveness of technical input, strategic planning and coordination between security forces.
"Security forces have broken the myth of Maad (Abhujmad) being an impenetrable sanctuary for Naxalites and have dealt a blow to their leadership," Sundarraj said.
The IG also claimed that this success has created a sense of fear in the upper echelons of the Naxalite leadership, and with security forces sealing off their strongholds, distrust in the Naxalite ranks has reached an all-time high as senior members Suspects were increasing.
