Chandigarh, Congress leader Tarlochan Singh on Wednesday filed his nomination papers for the by-election to Karnal Assembly seat, which will be held along with the general elections to 10 Lok Sabha seats in Haryana on May 2.
The ruling BJP has fielded Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini from this seat for the by-election.
Sixty-nine-year-old Singh was accompanied by former Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda and state Congress chief Uday Bhan when he was filing his candidature.
"Tarlochan ji filed his nomination today as a Congress candidate from Karnal assembly seat," Bhan said over phone.
In the 2019 assembly elections, Manohar Lal Khattar, who was the chief minister of the state at the time, defeated Singh to retain the Karnal seat.
Singh, former chief of the Haryana Minorities Commission, said he had joined the Youth Congress in 1982.
Saini, the outgoing Lok Sabha MP from Kurukshetra seat, took oath as Chief Minister in place of Khattar on March 12.
On 13 March, Khattar resigned as MLA from the Karnal Assembly seat and on the same day, he was named as the BJP candidate from the Karnal Lok Sabha seat.
