An order issued by the Waqf Board said, "Kamal-ud-din Farooqui is relieved from the duties of Imam-o-Khatib, Asar-e-Sharif, Hazratbal until the completion of the investigation or until further orders."

Imam Kamal-ud-din Farooqui presided over the conversion of a non-local to Islam after mass prayers at Hazratbal Dargah on the last Ramadan Friday.

Police registered an FIR at Police Station Nigeen against Srinagar resident Inayat Ahmed, son of Abdul Ahad of Saraf Kadal Nohetta Srinagar, who had allegedly forced his domestic help Sandeep to convert to Islam.

Jammu and Kashmir Waqf Board took action against Maulvi Kamal-ud-din Farooqui and relieved him from the duties of Imam-o-Khatib, Asar-e-Sharif, Hazratbal till the completion of the investigation.

The Waqf said there are allegations that Farooqui presided over forced conversions during Friday prayers.

The video of the conversion program went viral and questions were raised in various sections of the society whether the conversion was publicized to create disharmony between communities.

Many religious scholars have said that religion is a personal matter of faith and turning events related to faith change into a pompous mass event is against the spirit of every religion in the world, including Islam.
