Chasing 183, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Pat Cummins got the new ball to reduce PBKS to 20/3 in 4.4 overs, with Dhawan, Jonny Bairstow and Prabhsimran Singh scoring only 18 runs between them.

SRH then reduced PBKS to 114/6 with 67 runs needed from the last four overs, with Ashutosh (33 not out off 15 balls) and Shashank (46 not out off 25 balls) also reaching the total through their partnership. The score was very close to chase. 66 runs on just 27 balls.

29 runs were needed in the final over, but both could score 26 runs as PBKS fell behind by just two runs. "Shashank and Ashutosh played brilliant innings. I think we took them to a good score. Unfortunately, we could not take advantage of the first six overs and that's where we lost the game. That hurt us a lot. The wicket was not good. "There is so much bounce that everyone has to plan better," Dhawan said after the match.

PBKS can also look back at the six he hit to Jaydev Unadkat off the last ball of SRH's innings when Harshal Patel missed the chance at long-on. “We could have stopped 10-15 more runs and that would have made a difference,” he said. As a batting unit we didn't perform.

"It is important for the top order to perform. The performance of Shashank and Ashutosh gives us confidence and hope for the next game. We have to take stock and improve in certain areas," Dhawan said.

PBKS's next match in IPL 2024 will be against Rajasthan Royals in Mullanpur on Saturday.
