Dharwad (Karnataka), Muslim organizations here have called for a 'bandh (strike) on Monday condemning the recent murder of 23-year-old college student Neh Hiremath in Hubli.

Ismail Tamatgar, president of Dharwad-based Anjuman-e-Islam, said all businessmen of the Muslim community will remain closed from 10 am to 3 pm tomorrow to express condolences to the departed soul and protest against the brutal incident.

“Tomorrow we will remain closed. Chicken shops, garage workshops, fruit vendors, banks and institutions will remain closed to mourn the death and show solidarity with the family. We will put ‘Justice for Neha’ stickers on your shops,” Tamatgar said.

He said that a rally will also be taken out.

“The protest is to send a message that such an incident should not happen to any girl. We condemn this incident,” Tamtgar said.

Neha Hiremath (23), daughter of Hubli-Dharwa Municipal Corporation Congress councilor Niranjan Hiremath, was allegedly stabbed to death on the premises of BVB College on April 18.

Later the accused Faiyaz was arrested by the police.

Neha was a first year MCA student and Faiyaz was earlier her classmate.

The incident sparked public outrage with protests taking place in Hubli, Dharwad and several other places.

The BJP accused the Congress government of adopting a soft approach towards anti-social elements, resulting in the incident as the ruling party tried to project it as an incident from a personal perspective.
