New Delhi: The Indian Coast Guard has provided timely assistance to nine fishermen who suffered severe burn injuries following a fire and resulting explosion on a fishing boat at sea, officials said on Saturday.
The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) said in a statement that their boat caught fire on April 5 and sank in the sea.
It said that all nine fishermen jumped into the water to escape but some sustained serious burn injuries.
The Indian fishing boat "Durga Bhavani", damaged by the explosion, sank within minutes. Information about the fire and explosion was relayed from a nearby boat to the coast guard ship, which proceeded to pick up survivors, the statement said.
Acting swiftly, Indian Coast Guard ship "Veera", which was on patrol off Andhra coast, rescued nine fishermen on April 5, it said.ICGS "Veera" had received a radio message from a nearby fishing boat about a major fire in an Indian Fishing Boat (IFB) at a location approximately 6 nautical miles off Visakhapatnam Port.
The ICG said IFB "Durga Bhavan", an Andhra registered boat, had departed from Kakinada port on March 26 with nine crew.
Officials said the boat caught fire, resulting in an explosion in a gas cylinder onboard.
Sensing the urgency of the situation, ICGS "Veera" proceeded at top speed to reach the location within a few hours to render assistance to the survivors.
"All nine survivors were transferred to the ICG ship where they were provided first aid by the medical team," the statement said.
Meanwhile, Coast Guard District Headquarters No. 6 in coordination with J Fisheries Visakhapatnam immediately arranged ambulances along with medical teams to evacuate the seriously injured IFB crew, it said."All the injured fishermen were shifted to King George Hospital, Visakhapatnam for further treatment. Due to the prompt response of the ICG ship, the entire rescue operation was completed within a short period of six hours," the ICG said.
