The bodies of five people, who drowned in a slurry of animal waste collected in a pit in Pune, Maharashtra's Ahmednagar district, have been recovered hours after the incident. Officials gave this information on Wednesday.

The incident took place in Wakdi village of Nevasa tehsil on Tuesday evening and officials recovered the bodies of the five deceased after midnight, he said.

Inspector Dhananjay Jadhav of Nevasa police station said, "We have recovered the bodies of the victims from the animal waste slurry in the biogas pit. The bodies were taken out at 12.30 am on Wednesday and sent to the government hospital for post-mortem."

A cat had fallen into the pit and a person climbed down to rescue it, but got stuck in the mud inside, he said.

“To save him, five other people came down one after another and got trapped inside,” Jadhav said.

He said that five people died in the incident, while one was rescued and is undergoing treatment in the hospital.
