Returning officer Pradeep Kumar Dwivedi told reporters that Saraniya's nomination papers were found invalid, and hence cancelled.
He said, “Out of the 16 nominations filed till the last day on April 19, 15 were found valid. Candidates who wish to withdraw their nominations can do so till 3 pm tomorrow.,
Kokrajhar constituency, which is reserved for Scheduled Tribes, will go to polls in the third phase on May 7. The authority had postponed the scrutiny for this seat to be held on Saturday.
Apart from Kokrajhar, voting will be held in the third phase in Guwahati, Barpeta and Dhubri on May 7.
Scrutiny for the remaining three seats was conducted on Saturday and a total of 37 nominations were found valid.
Gana Suraksha Party (GSP) chief Saraniya, who has been representing the constituency as an independent since 2014, had filed a writ petition in the Gauhati High Court seeking cancellation of his ST (Plains) status at the state level. Subsequently, the MP filed nomination as a member of the Rawa community by submitting a certificate from the All Assam Tribal Union issued on November 18, 1986."...community field 'Boro' has been deleted and 'Rava' has been entered without any countersignature of the issuing authority," the returning officer said in his order.
Noting that the certificate looked "extremely suspicious", Dwivedi said I had "serious apprehensions" about its genuineness.
The order also said that Saraniya had won the 2019 Lok Sabha election from Kokrajhar seat by giving the Boro-Kachhari community certificate, which was recently canceled by the state level inquiry committee.
