New Delhi: The Indian Army has successfully field tested the indigenously developed Man-Portable Anti-Tank Guided Missile (MPATGM) weapon system, paving the way for its induction into the force's arsenal.

Officials said the weapon system has been designed and developed by the Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO).

The overall system consisted of MPATGM, launcher, target acquisition equipment and a fire control unit.

Defense Minister Rajnath Singh has praised DRDO and the Indian Army for the successful trials of the system and described it as an important step towards achieving self-reliance in advanced technology-based defense system development.

The Defense Ministry said that the MPATG weapon system has been evaluated several times in various flight configurations with the aim of proving the technology with high superiority."Warhead flight test was successfully conducted at Pokhran Field Firing Range on April 13. Missile performance and warhead performance were found to be remarkable," it said on Sunday.

It added that a sufficient number of missile firing tests have been successfully conducted towards achieving compliance with the full operational envelope set out in the General Staff qualitative requirements.

"Penetration testing of the MPATGM Tandem Warhead System has been successfully completed and has been found to be capable of defeating modern armor protected main battle tanks," it said.

The weapon system is well equipped for operations both day and night.“The dual mode seeker functionality is a great value addition to the missile capability for tank warfare. With this, the technology development and successful demonstration has been concluded and the system is now ready for end use evaluation trials leading to induction into the Indian Army Is." " said the ministry.

DRDO Chairman Sameer V Kamat congratulated the teams involved in the test.
