Notes

  • Cultural celebration on riverbanks.
1. The festival celebration occurs at the conclusion of the Diwali festival season. The Department of Tourism, Government of Goa, has been actively promoting this festival by organizing trips for tourists who wish to participate. Legend has it that Lord Krishna defeated and vanquished the Demon Tripur. Traditionally, this festival was observed in Sanquelim, North Goa, by releasing lamps into the river Valvanti. However, in recent years, constructing miniature models of boats and ships using paper, cardboard, or Styrofoam for a competition has become a popular highlight of the festivities. The event takes place at Vithalapur in Sanquelim, near the Pundalik Temple. Participants bring their boats to the shore for display, with the best-designed boat receiving an award from the festival organizers. In addition to the boat competition, there are various cultural programs, including performances by folk dance groups and artists, along with a stunning fireworks display.

Purpose

Celebrating the tradition of Lord Krishna's pastimes on the river, fostering community harmony and spiritual connection.
