- Kochi-Muziris Biennale: Contemporary art showcase, cultural exchange, Kochi's artistic heritage celebration.
The Kochi-Muziris Biennale is a prestigious international art exhibition hosted in the port city of Kochi, renowned for its rich multicultural heritage. This event serves as a platform to showcase contemporary art from around the world, featuring works by both Indian and international artists across a diverse range of mediums. In addition to the exhibitions, the Biennale also organizes discussions, seminars, film screenings, workshops, musical performances, and other educational activities. Spread across various venues in and around Fort Kochi, the Biennale has become a focal point for cultural activities in the region. Muziris, with its historical significance as an ancient port city, symbolizes the cultural exchanges that once took place between Kochi and foreign lands. This grand event attracts artists from more than 24 countries, in addition to India, who present their paintings, sculptures, installations, films, and performing arts at venues throughout Fort Kochi, Ernakulam, and Mattancherry. The area transforms into a vibrant carnival as these artists bring together contemporary and traditional arts, encompassing folk and classical traditions from different corners of the globe. Exhibitions are held in galleries, halls, and heritage buildings, offering a unique cultural experience for artists, art enthusiasts, researchers, collectors, students, and intellectuals to engage in a dialogue and exchange creative ideas. The current edition of the Biennale is curated by Singaporean artist Shubigi Rao under the theme ‘In Our Veins Flow Ink and Fire’.
